Feedback on "The Numbing of the American Mind"
After reading this article I agreed with most of the points the author was trying to get across and was able to personally relate to many of them. For example, I do agree that many people seem to not be very phased by tragic events we see on the news every single night. Unforunately I can say that I personally fall into this category. It's not that I don't feel horrible for these people and their families around the world who have lost a loved one or who have experienced an horrific event, it's just that there is so much happening it hard to even hear about EVERYTHING. I sometimes try to put myself in the position that these other people are going through, but it's just not the same until it happens to you personally. We are exposed to seeing and hearing about these things constantly that it's hard to not just brush it off. We are living such a busy lifestyle that we hardly have anytime to stop read the paper or watch the news and then sit there and put ourselves in other people's situations. People are constantly on the go living their own personal lives. I also completely agreed with his comment about how people over-schedule themselves in order to make them feel alive. They think that if they are able to keep busy they won't be able to feel this numbness. Personally when I am trying to get over a heartbreaking event in my life, this is exactly what I do. I will always try to stay busy, whether it's hanging out with friends, doing homework, going to class, or just going out in order to avoid thinking about whatever is bothering me at that time. It makes it easier to forget about it and go on with your everyday life although you are feeling the pain inside. I really enjoyed reading this article since I think that the author has some really good points about how people live their lives today.
